OPEN HOME
by Jessica Cheney

I need to find a quiet place,
A place where I can go.
I need to find a quiet space,
A space where I can grow.
I need to hear a happy tune,
A tune that makes me dance.
I need to hear a calling loon,
A loon that nests in the plants.
Where can I find a place like this?
I don't want to be alone---
Where can I find a place like this?
I need to find a home.

NO ESCAPE
by Maria Kardash

A bird flutters in the sky,
As another 40,000 children die.
A starving mother looks for food,
She hugs her clinging brood.
The sparkle gone within her eyes,
She rests her legs and slowly cries.
A scream rises from her throat,
She begins to run, as if to float.
Away from the dying, the hunger and the pain
From those who look on in vain.
She is leaving, though much too soon
Up to the sky, up to the moon.
Up to the stars, so forgiving and bright
Up to the long awaited light.
