Program Description

Bio of:
Larry Levine and Jane Finn Levine, Ed.D.

We moved from New York City to Kittery Point, Maine, and fell in love with the area and the people. Along with a change in venue, we also changed the focus of our work. In 1994 we founded Kids Can Make a Difference (KIDS), a program designed to educate young people about the root causes of hunger and poverty and help them understand that they can make a difference in their communities and world. KIDS has become a program of World Hunger Year (WHY), whose mission is to work for just policies creating a more secure world, and to support innovative programs creating sustainable livelihoods for all. We are members of WHY’s Advisory Board.

Larry has taught the KIDS program in many schools in New England and Metropolitan New York City. He also edits the KIDS newsletter, which is sent to more than 2,000 schools nationwide. Prior to moving to Maine, Larry was executive vice-president of marketing and sales for an international corporation based in New York City. During this period, he also conducted a seminar for juniors and seniors at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

In addition to her involvement with WHY and KIDS, Jane received a Doctor of Education degree in nutrition and education from Teachers College, Columbia University. As a nutrition educator, she has researched, written, and lectured extensively about how food marketers target school children and about the ethics of the nutrition profession’s complicity in such marketing efforts. Previously, she wrote the "Nutrition Watch" column for Why. Magazine. Prior to beginning her studies in 1987, Jane spent 18 years with Fortune 500 companies as a computer programmer, systems analyst and project manager.
